A white wave of concrete crests the hillside just below Ravello's historic centre — unmistakably the work of Oscar Niemeyer, the Brazilian architect who shaped Brasília and never once set foot in this Campanian hill town. The Auditorium that bears his name seats 400 people inside a shell whose concave form was deliberately compared to a mandolin's sound box, the geometry doing acoustical work that the cliffside setting could never manage alone.
Out front, a rectangular courtyard regularly hosts sculpture exhibitions, and the whole structure sits close enough to the coast that the Tyrrhenian light catches the white facade at odd angles throughout the day. The story behind Auditorium Oscar Niemeyer
The Ravello Foundation was established in June 2002 by regional and provincial officials alongside the Monte dei Paschi di Siena Foundation, with the explicit aim of expanding Ravello's cultural calendar beyond its summer peak. The idea of a covered auditorium took shape through the friendship between sociologist Domenico De Masi — then chairman of the festival — and Oscar Niemeyer, who gifted the concept design as a personal gesture.
Niemeyer himself never visited Ravello; his engineer Susskind made the site trips on his behalf. Construction began in October 2008 and the auditorium opened on 29 January 2010, extending the music season into months when the clifftop gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone would have been too cold and wet for outdoor performance.

The auditorium is on Via della Repubblica, about a five-minute walk from Piazza Duomo. Guided tours run daily at 11 AM and 3 PM; the exterior courtyard is free to enter at any time. For concerts, book through the Ravello Festival site in advance. Buses from Amalfi (SITA Sud, roughly 20 minutes) drop you close by.

Oscar Niemeyer is a unique architect. I've seen his amazing work in Brasilia, which is weird and incredible, I've seen his work in Lille, and much to my surprise there's an auditorium on the Amalfi coast. It's as unique as his other work. Visited it, it is being reconstructed. But weird as ever.
