Semana Santa Museum (Museo de Semana Santa)

Zamora's Holy Week processions are officially declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest, and the purpose-built museum on Plaza de Santa María la Nueva preserves the extraordinary sculptural floats — called pasos — that are carried through the streets each Easter. Outside of Holy Week, this is one of the most atmospheric and overlooked museums in Spain.

The Pasos & Their Craft

The museum houses over 50 pasos — massive, gilded processional platforms bearing life-size polychrome sculptures of scenes from the Passion of Christ. Many are centuries old, carved by named masters of Castilian religious sculpture, and the detail in the faces and drapery is breathtaking at close range in a way that the nighttime street processions never allow.

The building itself was designed specifically to display these objects and uses dramatic spotlighting that throws the carved figures into sharp relief against dark walls — it feels more like a contemporary art installation than a dusty religious museum, and visitors who wander in expecting little invariably stay for an hour.

Experiencing the Real Semana Santa

If you can time your visit to coincide with Holy Week (dates shift each year but fall between late March and mid-April), Zamora's processions are genuinely moving — solemn, slow, and conducted in near-total silence broken only by the beat of muffled drums. The Procesión del Silencio on Holy Wednesday is the most famous and one of the most haunting spectacles in Spain.

Book accommodation six months in advance for Holy Week; the city's 60,000 residents are joined by tens of thousands of visitors and every bed within 50 km fills up. Outside of Easter, the museum gives you the full visual experience without the crowds.
