Mercado de Abastos de Zamora

Housed in a handsome early-20th-century iron-and-brick building on Calle Benavente, Zamora's central food market is where the city actually eats. Arrive on a Saturday morning to find the stalls at their loudest and most colourful, piled high with produce that defines the Castilian table.

What to Look For

The market is the best place in the city to buy ternera de Aliste — the prized local beef from the mountainous comarca to the northwest, with a deep red colour and intense marbling that rivals any Iberian breed. Ask the butchers to slice you some for a hotel-room charcuterie board.

Cheese stalls carry wheels of Zamorano DO cheese at every stage of curing, from the pale, milky semicurado to the hard, crystalline añejo that crumbles like Parmesan. A wedge wrapped in paper makes the ideal picnic companion for the castle viewpoint.

Eating Inside the Market

Several bar counters operate inside and around the market perimeter, opening from around 08:00. Order a pincho de tortilla and a caña (small draught beer) and watch the vendors negotiate with regulars — this is as authentic as Zamoran daily life gets.

On Friday and Saturday mornings a small artisan section sets up near the main entrance selling honey from local beekeepers, homemade jams, and seasonal mushrooms foraged from the Sanabria highlands — chanterelles and porcini appear from late September through November.
