Parco dei Castelli Romani — Zagarolo Trails
Zagarolo sits at the edge of the Parco Regionale dei Castelli Romani, a protected natural area covering the ancient Alban volcano's slopes, and a network of waymarked trails begins almost immediately outside the town, threading through chestnut and oak woodland with views back over the Roman plain that reward even a short two-hour walk.
The Landscape and Its Geology
The entire Castelli Romani area rests on a vast shield volcano that last erupted around 36,000 years ago, leaving behind a landscape of crater lakes, tufa cliffs and extraordinarily fertile volcanic soil that explains why this microzone produces such exceptional wine and produce.
The forests around Zagarolo are dominated by Turkey oak (Quercus cerris) and sweet chestnut, with understorey of wild cyclamen, ferns and — in spring — carpets of wood anemone that make the forest floor look like something from a fairy tale.
Best Walks from Town
The trail heading southeast from the Porta Napoletana area drops into a shallow valley before climbing through mixed woodland toward the ridge connecting Zagarolo to Palestrina — a 7–10 km round trip with modest elevation gain suitable for most walkers.
Autumn is the prime season: chestnut harvesting is a local tradition and you will encounter families gathering fallen nuts with rakes and canvas bags, a scene that has repeated itself in these hills for a thousand years. The light through turning leaves in October is extraordinary for photography.
