Feria Internacional Ganadera de Zafra
Every October, Zafra transforms into the livestock capital of the Iberian Peninsula when the Feria Internacional Ganadera rolls into town — a tradition stretching back to a royal charter granted in 1453. This is no tourist-polished affair; it's a working fair where ranchers, breeders and agri-businesses from across Spain and Portugal do serious deals alongside festivity.
The Fair in Full Swing
The fairgrounds on the outskirts of town fill with prize Iberian pigs, fighting bulls, Merino sheep and Retinta cattle, while the trade pavilions buzz with machinery, olive oil producers and charcuterie vendors offering free tastings of jamón ibérico de bellota.
Evenings shift to the town centre, where the Plaza Grande and Plaza Chica host live flamenco, brass bands and the kind of spontaneous street dancing that no amount of stage-managing could replicate.
Beyond the Livestock Pens
The fair's agricultural roots don't overshadow its cultural programme — bullfights, equestrian parades and a dedicated wine and gastronomy tent run concurrently, making it easy to fill several days without repeating yourself.
Come hungry: the temporary food stalls outside the fairground serve migas extremeñas (fried breadcrumbs with chorizo and peppers) and tortas de aceite straight from the griddle, dishes you'll struggle to find this authentic outside the region.
