Wissembourg Weekly Market — Place de la République
Every Tuesday morning the Place de la République fills with stalls run by local farmers, cheese makers and charcutiers from the Northern Alsace countryside. It is a proper working market, not a tourist showcase, and the prices and produce reflect that honesty.
What to Buy
Arrive before 9 am to secure a wedge of Munster fermier or a slab of Bibeleskaes — the fresh fromage blanc whipped with herbs that Alsatians eat for breakfast. The charcuterie stalls pile up Fleischwurst, smoked Schiffala (pickled pork shoulder) and coarse-ground Mettwurst that beg to be eaten on a baguette on the spot.
Seasonal vegetables from the Alsace plain — white asparagus in April and May, mirabelle plums in August, sauerkraut cabbage in September — give the market its rhythm. A handful of flower growers and honey producers round out the circuit.
Market Etiquette and Surroundings
Vendors appreciate a 'Bonjour' and often speak the Alsatian dialect among themselves; a little French goes a long way. Bring a basket or tote — plastic bags are frowned upon and rarely offered.
After shopping, the cafés ringing the square open their terraces from 8 am. Grab a café crème at the Café de la Paix and watch the stalls pack up — the social theatre of a small French market town at its most authentic.
