Restaurant Au Moulin de la Walk
Housed in a converted 18th-century mill on the Walk river channel at the edge of the old town, this restaurant serves some of the most honest Alsatian cooking in the northern corner of the region. The terrace hangs literally over the water, making it one of the most romantic lunch spots in Alsace.
What to Order
Start with the Flammekueche — the thin-crust Alsatian tarte flambée — in its classic version: crème fraîche, lardons and onion on a blistered, slightly charred base. Follow it with the choucroute garnie, a mound of slow-braised sauerkraut buried under three or four cuts of pork and a fat Strasbourg sausage. Pair it with a half-litre of the house Sylvaner.
For dessert, the Kougelhopf glacé — a frozen version of the region's iconic ring-shaped cake — is a local speciality worth the calories. The wine list leans heavily on producers from the Alsace Route des Vins, with several bottles from the nearby Cleebourg cooperative that rarely appear on menus further south.
The Setting
The mill wheel no longer turns but the millrace still runs beneath the terrace, its sound a constant gentle rush that makes conversation feel intimate even when the room is full. Inside, exposed stone walls and dark beams create the warm, slightly dim atmosphere that Alsatians call 'gemütlich'.
Book a terrace table for lunch in May through September — the dappled light through the plane trees and the sound of the water make it one of those meals you describe to people for years afterwards.
