Mercato Settimanale di Volterra
Every Saturday morning Piazza dei Priori and the surrounding streets fill with stalls run by the same families who have traded here for generations. This is where Volterrans actually shop — for Cinta Senese salumi, local pecorino at every age, seasonal vegetables from the Val di Cecina and bolts of fabric nobody told tourists about.
What to Buy and Eat
The cheese stalls are the heart of the market: look for pecorino fresco (soft, milky, eaten within days), semi-stagionato (aged two months, perfect for a picnic) and the hard, pungent stagionato that crumbles like parmesan. Ask for a taste — vendors expect it and take pride in educating you.
Alongside the food stalls you'll find vendors selling local honey, truffle products from the surrounding hills, hand-thrown terracotta from nearby San Miniato, and second-hand tools and household goods that give the whole event an unpretentious, workaday energy.
Timing and Etiquette
Stalls set up from around 07:30 and the best produce is gone by 11:00, so arrive early. The market wraps up by 13:00, after which the square returns to its medieval calm.
Bring cash — most stalls don't accept cards. A canvas bag is useful and appreciated. Greet vendors with 'Buongiorno' before asking prices and you'll almost certainly get a warmer reception and occasionally a better deal.
