Enoteca del Duca
Tucked into a 16th-century palazzo on Via di Castello, Enoteca del Duca has been the address for serious Tuscan eating in Volterra for decades. The wine list runs to hundreds of labels from across Tuscany, but it's the kitchen's commitment to hyper-local ingredients that keeps locals and discerning visitors coming back.
What to Order
Start with the pici al ragù di cinghiale — thick hand-rolled pasta with wild boar sauce that is earthy, slow-cooked and deeply satisfying. In autumn the menu pivots around local truffles: shaved over eggs, stirred into risotto or simply laid on toasted bread with good olive oil.
The secondi lean on Val di Cecina lamb and Cinta Senese pork, both raised within a short drive of the restaurant. Portions are generous by Tuscan standards, so share a primo and a secondo between two if you want to reach dessert — the cantucci with Vin Santo are non-negotiable.
The Wine and the Space
The dining room occupies a barrel-vaulted cellar with exposed tufa stone walls, candlelit tables and a relaxed formality that encourages long lunches. The sommelier is enthusiastic without being intimidating — tell them your budget and flavour preferences and they'll find you something memorable from the Vernaccia di San Gimignano or Bolgheri appellations nearby.
Book ahead for Friday and Saturday evenings, when the restaurant fills with both locals celebrating and visitors who've done their research. Lunch on a weekday is more relaxed and often features a shorter, better-value set menu.
