Terme dei Papi

Just two kilometres west of the city walls, a single vast outdoor thermal pool fed by the Bullicame spring has been soothing weary bodies since Etruscan times — Dante even mentioned the Bullicame in the Inferno. Today Terme dei Papi offers one of the most accessible and genuinely therapeutic hot-spring experiences in central Italy, without the exclusivity price tag of Tuscany's famous spas.

The Water and Its Powers

The main outdoor pool — the Piscina dei Papi — holds water at a constant 58 °C at the source, cooled to around 40 °C in the bathing area. The water is rich in sulphur, bicarbonate and calcium, and has been prescribed for respiratory and skin conditions for centuries. Mist rises off the surface on cool mornings, creating an almost otherworldly atmosphere.

The Bullicame spring itself, a short walk from the main facility, is a circular natural pool that locals still visit freely. Its turquoise-white colour — caused by dissolved minerals — makes it one of the most photogenic natural features in Lazio, and it is completely free to see.

Practical Pleasures

The Terme dei Papi complex includes indoor pools, mud-therapy cabins, a wellness centre and a good on-site restaurant serving straightforward Lazio cooking. Day passes are reasonably priced and include access to the outdoor thermal pool and changing facilities — book ahead at weekends.

The best time to visit is a cool autumn or winter morning, when the steam rising from the hot water against cold air is at its most dramatic and the summer crowds have gone. Bring an old swimsuit — the sulphur water will discolour a white one permanently.
