L'Étape Gourmande at Domaine de la Giraudière
Set inside a working farm estate on the edge of Villandry village, L'Étape Gourmande is the kind of restaurant that Loire Valley locals keep to themselves — a seasonal lunch spot where the menu is dictated entirely by what was harvested that morning, often from the château's own Potager.
The Setting & Atmosphere
Tables are arranged in a honey-coloured tufa stone courtyard shaded by a vast plane tree; in cooler months the dining room inside the old farmhouse has exposed beams and a fireplace that make it feel like eating in someone's particularly well-fed grandmother's kitchen.
The estate raises its own chickens and grows heritage vegetables; the connection between garden and plate is not a marketing slogan here but a literal 200-metre walk from the potager to the kitchen.
What to Order
The set lunch menu — typically two or three courses at a fixed price — changes weekly but reliably features a terrine of the season, a slow-braised main (guinea fowl with chanterelles, or a tian of courgettes and tomatoes in summer) and a tart made with whatever fruit is ripe.
The wine list leans heavily on Touraine appellations: Azay-le-Rideau blanc from Chenin Blanc grown on the nearby tufa slopes pairs beautifully with the lighter starters and is rarely seen outside the immediate region.
Booking & Practicalities
The restaurant is open for lunch only, Thursday through Sunday, from roughly April to October; booking at least two days ahead is essential in July and August when every table fills with château visitors who have done their research.
It sits on the D7 road at the western edge of Villandry village — look for the stone gateway and the hand-painted sign; there is no grand entrance, which is exactly the point.
