Château de Villandry & Its Renaissance Gardens

No garden in France stops visitors in their tracks quite like Villandry's. Six terraced levels of geometrically clipped box hedges, vegetable parterres and water mirrors cascade down a Loire hillside in a spectacle that is equal parts horticultural masterpiece and open-air museum.

A Garden Built on Symbolism

The ornamental kitchen garden — the Potager — is the real showstopper: nine giant squares planted in seasonal patterns of cabbages, leeks, chard and squash whose colours shift from spring pastels to autumn burgundy as the year turns.

The Garden of Love sits one terrace above, its clipped yews sculpted into hearts, fans and sword blades that represent the four faces of love: tender, passionate, fickle and tragic. Stand at the belvedere steps and the whole allegory snaps into focus.

Inside the Château

The 16th-century castle itself — the last great Renaissance château built on the Loire — houses a modest but rewarding collection of Spanish paintings assembled by the Carvallo family, who rescued the estate from ruin in 1906.

Don't skip the keep tower: it's the sole surviving medieval remnant and gives a bird's-eye view over the water garden's shimmering moat-fed pool that no ground-level photo can replicate.

Timing Your Visit

Arrive when the gates open at 9 am in June or July to walk the Potager before tour groups arrive; the low morning light turns the dew-covered vegetables into something from a Flemish still life.

The gardens are illuminated on selected summer evenings — the Son et Lumière nights — when coloured spotlights make the geometric parterres look like stained glass laid flat on the earth.
