Museo Internazionale della Calzatura
Vigevano made its fortune in shoes — at its 1970s peak the city produced 40 million pairs a year — and this museum inside the Castello Sforzesco tells that story through 10,000 extraordinary objects spanning six centuries of footwear history. From Eleonora of Toledo's 16th-century chopines to a pair worn by Pope John Paul II, the collection is genuinely surprising.
Inside the castle's historic rooms
The museum occupies rooms within the Castello Sforzesco, which means the exhibits share space with frescoed ceilings and thick medieval walls — an atmospheric backdrop for showcasing everything from peasant clogs to haute couture heels. The collection is arranged chronologically, so you move through time as you walk through the castle's enfilade of halls.
Highlights include a pair of 18th-century Venetian zoccoli (platform shoes) nearly 50 cm tall, a section dedicated to the industrial machinery that made Vigevano famous, and a rotating display of contemporary designer pieces donated by Italian fashion houses.
Why it matters beyond fashion
The museum is as much about local economic and social history as it is about style. Panels explain how the Lomellina plain's leather-tanning tradition fed into a cottage industry that eventually became one of Europe's most productive shoe-manufacturing districts, employing tens of thousands of workers in small family workshops.
A separate room is dedicated to the tools and lasts used by cobblers, and there is a working demonstration area where, on weekend mornings, a craftsman shows hand-stitching techniques that have changed little in two centuries.
