Mercato di Piazza Ducale
Twice a week the most beautiful square in Vigevano transforms into a bustling street market, with fruit and vegetable stalls, cheese vendors and clothing traders setting up their awnings directly beneath those 500-year-old porticoes. It is the most photogenic grocery run you will ever do.
What you will find
Tuesday and Friday mornings are market days, and by 08:00 the piazza fills with local producers selling seasonal Lomellina specialities: Carnaroli rice from the surrounding paddies, aged Grana Padano wheels, fresh-made pasta, and in autumn, enormous porcini mushrooms from the Ticino valley. The cheese stall near the cathedral end usually has a sharp, crumbly Grana that vendors will slice for you to taste on the spot.
Clothing and household goods occupy the eastern porticoes, but the food section clustered around the central wellhead is where the real action is. Elderly Vigevanesi do their weekly shopping here with a seriousness of purpose that is itself worth watching.
How to make a morning of it
Arrive by 08:30 to catch the market at its fullest before the heat builds. Pick up a bag of local rice, some vacuum-packed salami from the Lomellina tradition (flavoured with white wine and garlic), and a wedge of aged cheese, then retreat to one of the café terraces under the arches for a cappuccino and a cornetto while the market buzzes around you.
By midday the stalls begin packing up, so this is strictly a morning experience. The piazza is cleaned and returned to its serene self by early afternoon, which makes for a pleasing before-and-after contrast if you visit twice in the same day.
