Basilica Palladiana
Rising above Piazza dei Signori like a stone crown, the Basilica Palladiana is Andrea Palladio's most celebrated public building and the architectural heart of Vicenza. Its two-storey loggia of white Pietra di Vicenza stone glows golden at dusk, making it one of the most photogenic facades in all of northern Italy.
A Loggia That Changed Architecture
Palladio wrapped a crumbling Gothic palazzo in a rhythmic sequence of arches flanked by smaller openings — a device so elegant it became known worldwide as the 'Palladian motif'. The solution saved the building and launched the architect's international fame in the 1540s.
Climb to the copper-roofed terrace level and you get an intimate look at the sheer scale of the vaulting, plus a bird's-eye view of the piazza's daily life below — market stalls, aperitivo crowds and all.
Inside the Exhibition Halls
The vast Gothic hall inside hosts rotating blockbuster art and history exhibitions, so check the calendar before you visit — past shows have drawn works from Tintoretto and Tiepolo.
Even between exhibitions the interior is worth entering for its medieval timber roof, shaped like an upturned ship's hull, which spans an extraordinary 52 metres without internal columns.
