Museu Episcopal de Vic (MEV)
Tucked beside the cathedral, the Museu Episcopal de Vic houses one of the world's finest collections of Romanesque and Gothic art outside of Barcelona's MNAC — and with a fraction of the crowds. Polychrome wooden Madonnas, vivid 12th-century apse frescoes, and an astonishing treasury of medieval goldsmithing make this a pilgrimage for any lover of medieval art.
The Romanesque Collection
The museum's ground floor is devoted to Romanesque sculpture and painting salvaged from rural Catalan churches, many of which would otherwise have been lost to decay or sold abroad in the early 20th century. The carved wooden Descent from the Cross (Davallament) figures are among the most emotionally powerful medieval sculptures you will ever see.
Entire painted apses — removed stone by stone from remote mountain churches — have been reconstructed inside the museum so you can stand inside a 12th-century apse and look up at Christ in Majesty exactly as medieval parishioners did. The colours, protected from centuries of candle smoke, are astonishingly vivid.
Gothic and Beyond
The upper floors move into Gothic altarpieces, Renaissance goldsmithing, and Baroque devotional objects. The collection of 14th- and 15th-century painted retables from Osona workshops rivals anything in Catalonia for quality and variety.
Don't miss the treasury room, where reliquaries, processional crosses, and embroidered vestments reveal the extraordinary wealth and craftsmanship of medieval Catalan religious culture.
Planning Your Visit
The museum occupies a purpose-built modernist building (opened 2002) designed to display large-scale works with excellent natural lighting. Allow at least two hours; serious art lovers should budget three.
Audio guides are available in English and are genuinely informative rather than perfunctory. The museum shop stocks excellent art-history publications on Catalan Romanesque that are hard to find elsewhere.
