Mercat del Dissabte (Vic Saturday Market)
Every Saturday morning, Vic's vast Plaça Major fills with over 300 stalls selling everything from local sausages and artisan cheese to hand-thrown pottery and wildflower honey. It is one of the oldest and largest weekly markets in Catalonia, drawing locals and visitors alike into a centuries-old trading tradition.
A Square Built for Commerce
Plaça Major is one of the grandest medieval squares in Catalonia, ringed by Gothic and Baroque arcades that shelter stallholders and browsers from sun and rain alike. The market has been held here since the 10th century, making it a living piece of Vic's mercantile DNA.
Arrive before 9 a.m. to watch farmers unload crates of seasonal produce — fat spring onions in February, wild mushrooms in autumn — and to snag the best cuts of the city's famous llonganissa sausage before the crowds descend.
What to Buy and Taste
Vic sits at the heart of Osona comarca, a region celebrated for its cold-cured pork products. Look for llonganissa de Vic (a slender, white-mould-cured salami), fuet, and botifarra negra from producers who will happily let you taste before you buy.
Beyond charcuterie, local honey sellers from the Guilleries hills, artisan bread bakers, and cheese makers from nearby farms make this a genuine farm-to-square experience rather than a tourist trinket fair.
Practical Tips for Market Day
The market runs from roughly 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday year-round. A smaller Tuesday market also occupies the square if you can't make it on the weekend.
Bring a reusable bag and cash — many small producers don't accept cards. The surrounding cafés under the arcades are perfect for a mid-morning café amb llet and a coca de recapte while you rest your feet.
