The Cure Valley & Sentier de la Forêt du Morvan
Drop down from the village into the Cure river valley and you enter a completely different world: cool, forested and birdsong-loud, with marked walking trails threading through the northern edge of the Parc Naturel Régional du Morvan. The contrast with the sun-baked limestone ridge above is startling and wonderful.
Walking to Saint-Père-sous-Vézelay
The most satisfying short walk from Vézelay descends the hillside to Saint-Père-sous-Vézelay, a village of about 300 people sitting in the valley floor, reachable in 25 minutes on foot via a marked path from the lower car park. The Gothic church of Notre-Dame de Saint-Père, begun in the 13th century, is genuinely magnificent and almost entirely overlooked by visitors who stay on the hill.
In Saint-Père you can also visit Les Fontaines Salées, an archaeological site of Gallo-Roman and Bronze Age mineral springs, open in summer with a small on-site museum. It's one of the most unexpected discoveries in the region.
The Morvan Forest Trails
Several GR (Grande Randonnée) trails pass through or near Vézelay, including sections of the GR13 which links Fontainebleau to Vézelay and continues south into the Morvan. Day sections from the village into the forest offer shade, wildlife and genuine solitude even in peak tourist season.
The Cure river itself is clear and cold, popular with kayakers in spring and early summer when water levels are high. Rental outfitters operate from Arcy-sur-Cure, about 15 km north, where the river also passes a remarkable cave system decorated with prehistoric paintings.
Wildlife & Seasons
The Morvan is home to red deer, roe deer, wild boar and a rich bird population including black storks and short-toed snake eagles. Dawn and dusk walks along the valley floor in spring offer the best wildlife sightings.
Autumn is spectacular: the mixed oak, beech and chestnut forests turn vivid orange and gold, and the mist that pools in the valley in the mornings creates an almost cinematic atmosphere when viewed from the basilica terrace above.
