Le Bougainville Restaurant

Tucked along the rue Saint-Étienne in the heart of the village, Le Bougainville is the kind of honest, owner-run Burgundian restaurant that food writers dream about: seasonal menus, local producers credited on the chalkboard, and a wine list that leans hard into the underrated Vézelay AOC Chardonnay. Book ahead in summer — word has gotten around.

What to Order

The œufs en meurette — poached eggs in a deep, wine-dark Burgundy sauce with lardons and croutons — is a benchmark dish here, rich without being heavy. Follow it with whatever slow-braised meat the kitchen is running that week; the chef sources from Morvan farms and the quality is consistently high.

Vézelay AOC white wine is made from Chardonnay grown on the limestone slopes just below the village and is criminally underrated compared to its Côte d'Or neighbours. Ask the server to recommend a local domaine; the wines from Marc Meneau's former estate and from Domaine de la Cadette are both worth seeking out.

The Setting & the Vibe

The dining room is stone-walled and candlelit in the evening, with mismatched wooden chairs and a genuinely warm welcome that feels earned rather than performed. In summer, a handful of tables spill onto the narrow street, perfect for people-watching as pilgrims and tourists drift up toward the basilica.

Lunch is the better-value meal: the two-course weekday formule is excellent and lets you eat well without a long, lingering commitment. Dinner is more leisurely and romantic, with the kitchen firing on all cylinders.

Booking & Practicalities

Reservations are strongly advised from May through September; the restaurant fills quickly on weekends. Phone or email a day or two in advance — they speak enough English to take a booking without stress.

The restaurant is closed on certain weekdays out of season; check current hours before making the trip, as schedules in small Burgundian villages can shift between summer and winter.
