Vernazza Harbour & Doria Castle Tower
Vernazza's natural harbour — the only true port in all of Cinque Terre — is framed by pastel tower houses that tumble straight into the Ligurian Sea. Climb the 11th-century Torre Doria for a 360-degree panorama that rewards every one of its 185 steps.
The Piazza & the Waterfront
Piazza Marconi sits at the heart of the village where the caruggi (narrow lanes) spill out onto the sea. Stone steps lead directly into the harbour basin, where local fishing boats bob beside swimmers in the clearest turquoise water on the Italian Riviera.
The medieval church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia anchors the piazza's eastern edge, its Gothic-Ligurian bell tower a perfect counterpoint to the coloured facades behind it. Arrive at golden hour and the whole scene ignites in amber and rose.
Torre Doria: The Village Crown
The cylindrical Doria Castle Tower perches on the rocky headland above the harbour. Built by the Republic of Genoa as a watchtower against Saracen raids, it offers an unbroken view from Monterosso al Mare in the north to Corniglia's cliffs in the south.
Entry costs around €1.50 and the tower is usually open daily from mid-morning to sunset. Go early to beat the cruise-day crowds and to catch the morning light painting the harbour in soft gold.
