Punta di Vernazza Coastal Trail Overlook
Halfway along the classic Sentiero Azzurro trail between Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare, a rocky promontory known locally as Punta di Vernazza delivers the single most breathtaking backward glance over the village — all terracotta rooftops, the harbour mouth, and open sea in one frame.
The Trail to the Overlook
From Vernazza's train station, follow the blue-waymarked Sentiero Azzurro (Trail 2) northward toward Monterosso. The path climbs steeply through olive groves and terraced vineyards for about 25 minutes before the cliff edge opens up to the south.
The overlook itself is an unofficial stopping point — a flat rock shelf just off the main path where hikers naturally pause. There is no railing and the drop is sheer, so step carefully, especially after rain when the limestone becomes slippery.
Best Time & Practical Notes
Sunrise is extraordinary here: the village is still in shadow while the sea catches the first light, creating a dramatic contrast that photographers chase. Sunset works equally well, flooding the terracotta rooftops with warm amber.
The Vernazza–Monterosso section of the Sentiero Azzurro requires a Cinque Terre Card (€7.50 for a single-day trekking pass as of 2024). Cards are sold at the park information office beside Vernazza station.
