Forêt Domaniale de Verdun (Zone Rouge)

The Zone Rouge is a 10,000-hectare state forest planted after WWI over ground so contaminated with unexploded shells, human remains and chemical agents that it was declared permanently uninhabitable. Walking its marked trails today, beneath cathedral-tall pines and past ghost-village monuments, is one of the most quietly devastating nature experiences in Europe.

Walking the Marked Trails

The ONF (Office National des Forêts) maintains several waymarked footpaths through the forest, including the Circuit du Bois des Caures, which passes the memorial to Colonel Driant — the French officer who held this wood against overwhelming odds in February 1916. The trail is flat, well-signed and takes about 90 minutes at a gentle pace.

Every few hundred metres the forest floor ripples with shell craters, now softened by moss and fern but still unmistakably artificial. In autumn the low-angled light through the pines turns the whole landscape amber and gold, making it simultaneously beautiful and profoundly melancholy.

The Ghost Villages

Nine villages were so completely destroyed during the battle that they were never rebuilt. Each ghost village — Fleury-devant-Douaumont, Bezonvaux, Cumières-le-Mort-Homme among them — is marked by a small chapel, a mayor's office sign and a plaque listing the pre-war population. Walking between two or three of them in an afternoon is a deeply affecting experience.

Birdlife has reclaimed the forest enthusiastically: listen for the drumming of black woodpeckers, spot red kites soaring above the canopy and, in spring, hear the cuckoo calling from the same ridges where artillery once drowned out all sound. Nature's resilience here is almost defiant.
