Basilica di San Marco
No building in Italy prepares you for the sheer gilded excess of St Mark's Basilica, whose 8,000 square metres of mosaic ceiling shimmer like a second sun above the Piazza. Five centuries of Venetian ambition, plunder and devotion are layered into every marble column and bronze horse.
Inside the Golden Basilica
Step through the narthex and let your eyes adjust: the barrel-vaulted ceiling is an unbroken river of gold-ground mosaics depicting scenes from Genesis to the life of Christ, completed between the 11th and 13th centuries by Byzantine craftsmen brought directly from Constantinople.
The Pala d'Oro, tucked behind the high altar, is a jewelled altarpiece encrusted with 1,927 authentic gemstones — sapphires, rubies, emeralds and pearls — assembled over 600 years of Venetian trade. It is arguably the most valuable single object in the city.
The Loggia dei Cavalli & Museo Marciano
Climb the internal staircase to the museum level and step onto the outdoor loggia for a face-to-face encounter with the four gilded bronze horses (the originals are inside, safe from pollution). The view down onto Piazza San Marco from this balcony is one of the great urban panoramas in Europe.
The Museo Marciano above the nave displays removed mosaic panels, medieval floor sections and the original horses up close — a quieter, less-visited space that rewards the curious traveller willing to pay the small extra admission.
