No photograph prepares you for the moment you step inside St Mark's Basilica and 8,000 square metres of gold-leaf mosaic ignite above your head. This 11th-century Byzantine marvel is the centrepiece of Venice and earns every superlative thrown at it.
The Mosaics & the Pala d'Oro
The ceiling mosaics narrate the entire New Testament in glittering tesserae — arrive when morning light pours through the west façade windows and the gold literally pulses. Book the Museo di San Marco add-on to stand on the upper loggia, nose-to-nose with the replica Triumphal Quadriga horses.
Behind the high altar hides the Pala d'Oro, a jewelled altarpiece studded with 1,927 precious stones. It costs just €2 extra and most visitors walk straight past it — don't be one of them.
Beating the Crowds
Pre-book your entry slot online at the official site; walk-up queues in summer can swallow two hours of your morning. Aim for the first entry of the day (doors open 09:30) or the last slot before closing when coach groups have left.
Dress code is strict — shoulders and knees must be covered, and staff will turn you away. Keep a light scarf in your bag and you'll sail through.
