Musée de Vendôme (Ancien Couvent des Cordeliers)
Hidden behind an unassuming door off the Rue de l'Abbaye, the Musée de Vendôme occupies a beautifully restored 15th-century Franciscan convent — complete with a Gothic cloister garden — and houses a surprisingly rich collection of fine art, archaeology, and local history that most visitors to the Loire Valley never discover.
The Collection
The museum's archaeology rooms trace the Vendômois from prehistoric flint tools through Gallo-Roman bronzes to medieval sculpture salvaged from demolished churches. Upstairs, the fine-art galleries hold 17th- and 18th-century French and Flemish paintings, decorative arts, and a dedicated room on Marshal de Rochambeau — the Vendôme-born general who helped secure American independence at Yorktown.
A small but excellent collection of 19th-century regional paintings documents the Loir Valley landscape before tourism arrived: quiet, reedy riverbanks, washerwomen, and poplar-lined towpaths that you can still find if you know where to look.
The Cloister Garden
The real secret is the cloister itself: a perfectly proportioned Gothic quadrangle with a central well, planted with box hedges and seasonal flowers. On a warm afternoon it is one of the most peaceful spots in Vendôme — cool stone, birdsong, and almost nobody else around.
The cloister also displays lapidary fragments — carved capitals, gargoyles, and tomb slabs — that didn't fit inside the galleries but deserve careful attention.
