Château de Vendôme Ramparts
The ruined medieval château perched on its rocky promontory above the old town offers the finest 360-degree view in the Vendômois — a sweeping panorama of slate rooftops, the Loir threading through water-meadows, and the abbey towers rising from the green valley below. The walk up is gentle enough for most fitness levels and rewards you with a scene that feels utterly removed from the 21st century
The Climb and the Castle
Access the château via the Porte Saint-Georges, a beautifully preserved 14th-century gatehouse that frames your first glimpse of the ramparts. The path winds through terraced gardens — the Jardins du Château — planted with roses and medicinal herbs that bloom brilliantly from May through September.
The castle itself is largely a romantic ruin: only sections of the curtain wall and a round tower survive intact, but they're enough to clamber along and find your perfect vantage point over the valley.
Best Times to Visit
Sunrise and late afternoon are magical here: the Loir catches the light and the abbey's bell tower turns gold against a blue sky. In summer, the gardens host occasional open-air concerts — check the Vendôme cultural programme for dates.
Winter visits are underrated: the bare trees open up the view even further, and you'll almost certainly have the ramparts entirely to yourself on a weekday morning.
