The Borgo District
Sandwiched between the Vatican walls and the Tiber, the Borgo is the oldest continuously inhabited neighbourhood in Rome — a tight grid of medieval lanes that pilgrims have navigated for over a thousand years. Duck off the tourist drag of Via della Conciliazione and you find a quarter that still feels like a village.
The Streets Worth Walking
Borgo Pio is the main pedestrian lane running parallel to the Vatican walls, lined with trattorias, small alimentari and the occasional workshop. In the mornings, before the tour groups arrive, it is quiet enough to hear the swifts screaming overhead and smell the bread from the bakeries.
Borgo Santo Spirito leads to the church of Santo Spirito in Sassia, one of Rome's oldest hospitals, still functioning today. The façade is Renaissance, the interior holds a cycle of frescoes by Jacopo Zucchi, and almost no tourists ever go inside.
Eating and Drinking Like a Local
Osteria dell'Angelo on Via Bettolo (a short walk into the Prati neighbourhood bordering the Borgo) is a cult address for Roman working-class cooking: coda alla vaccinara (oxtail stew), rigatoni con la pajata, and a fixed-price lunch that has barely changed in thirty years. Book ahead — it fills with Vatican staff and neighbourhood regulars.
For a quick coffee, Bar San Pietro on Via della Conciliazione is where Vatican employees stop before their shifts. The cornetti are made fresh each morning and the espresso is pulled correctly short and dark.
The Passetto and the Walls
Running along the top of the ancient Leonine Wall is the Passetto di Borgo, the covered escape corridor that connects Castel Sant'Angelo to the Vatican. You can see it clearly from the street below — a raised walkway cutting above the rooftops, a reminder that even popes needed an exit strategy.
The neighbourhood is best explored on foot in the early morning or late afternoon when the light turns the ochre walls gold and the Via della Conciliazione crowds have thinned. Give yourself ninety minutes to wander without a map.
