Campo dei Fiori Summit & Observatory
At 1,226 metres, the Campo dei Fiori massif is Varese's own private balcony over northern Lombardy, reachable by a winding road through the Regional Park of the same name. The early-20th-century Grand Hotel Campo dei Fiori — a Liberty-style ruin that looks straight out of a Wes Anderson film — adds a layer of romantic melancholy to the view.
The Panorama
On a clear morning you can identify Monte Rosa, the Matterhorn, and the entire arc of the Lombard pre-Alps, with Lake Maggiore, Lake Lugano and Lake Varese laid out below like a geography lesson in blue.
The Osservatorio Astronomico di Varese, an active research observatory on the summit, occasionally opens for public evening sessions — check their website for dates, because watching Jupiter through a professional telescope at this altitude is something you will not forget.
Hiking & the Liberty Hotel Ruin
A network of marked trails crosses the massif; the most popular loop from the Passo della Bevera to the summit takes about two hours and passes through beech forest alive with woodpeckers.
The abandoned Grand Hotel, built in 1912 and closed since the 1960s, stands in photogenic decay near the summit. It is fenced off for safety but the exterior — with its ornate balconies and peeling facade — is one of the most photographed spots in the province.
