Restaurante El Refugio, Valverde
On a quiet side street in central Valverde, El Refugio has been feeding islanders and in-the-know visitors with straightforward, deeply satisfying Canarian cooking for years. This is where you eat the way El Hierro actually eats — no tourist-menu shortcuts, just proper island food at fair prices.
What to Order
Start with a plate of papas arrugadas — small, salt-crusted wrinkled potatoes — served with both red and green mojo sauce made in-house. Follow it with the ropa vieja herreña, a slow-cooked chickpea and shredded meat stew that is the island's most beloved comfort dish.
Fresh fish changes daily depending on what the Valverde boats landed; the cherne (wreckfish) grilled with garlic and local olive oil is exceptional when available. Finish with a glass of the island's own sweet moscatel wine alongside a slice of quesadilla herreña — a crumbly, anise-scented pastry unique to El Hierro.
The Atmosphere and the Locals
The dining room is unfussy — tiled floors, wooden tables, a handwritten daily specials board — and the clientele is almost entirely local at lunchtime, which is the best endorsement any restaurant can have.
Lunch is the main event here, as it is across the Canary Islands. Arrive between 13:30 and 14:30 for the full menu del día, which typically includes three courses, bread, a drink and coffee for around €12–14 — extraordinary value for cooking of this quality.
