Pozo de la Salud Spa & Thermal Spring

Hidden on the remote northwest coast of El Hierro near the village of Sabinosa — about 40 km from Valverde but absolutely worth the winding drive — the Pozo de la Salud is a thermal spring whose bicarbonate-rich waters have been credited with curative properties since the 18th century. The modern spa hotel built around the original well is one of the most peaceful places in the entire Canary Islan

The Spring That Made El Hierro Famous

The spring was documented as early as 1740, when islanders and visiting sailors reported remarkable recoveries from skin and digestive ailments after drinking and bathing in the waters. The current hotel and spa, operated by the Cabildo of El Hierro, channels the natural mineral water into indoor thermal pools, jet baths and treatment rooms.

The water temperature hovers around 22°C — refreshing rather than scalding — and the mineral content is genuinely distinctive: high in bicarbonates, calcium and magnesium, with a faint, pleasant effervescence that you can feel on your skin.

The Drive and the Setting

The road from Valverde to Sabinosa is a spectacle in itself — it descends through the El Golfo valley past ancient sabina juniper trees twisted into surreal sculptures by the trade winds, then hugs the volcanic coastline before climbing to the village.

Even if you do not book a spa treatment, the hotel's terrace bar overlooks a black-lava coastline and the open Atlantic, and is one of the most quietly dramatic spots on the island for a coffee or a glass of local wine at sunset.
