Marché de Valenciennes — Place d'Armes

Every Wednesday and Saturday morning, the Place d'Armes transforms into a vivid, fragrant open-air market that has been feeding Valenciennes for centuries. It is the single best place to taste the texture of everyday life in the Hainaut.

What to buy and taste

Stalls spill across the cobblestones with maroilles cheese (pungent, orange-rinded and utterly addictive), locally grown chicory, and andouillette sausages from the Avesnois. Cheese vendors will happily let you taste before you buy — take them up on it every single time.

Seasonal produce is the real draw: white asparagus from the Valenciennois fields in April and May, strawberries from nearby Artres in June, and root vegetables and game charcuterie through autumn and winter. The rhythm of the market tells you exactly what time of year it is.

Beyond the food stalls

The Saturday market is larger and spills into adjacent streets, adding clothing, household goods and flower stalls to the mix. Arrive before 9:00 to watch the vendors set up and to snag the best maroilles before it sells out.

The Place d'Armes itself — flanked by the ornate Hôtel de Ville and the Gothic Collégiale du Saint-Cordon — provides a backdrop so photogenic it almost feels staged. Grab a coffee from one of the surrounding brasseries and watch the square fill up.

Getting the most out of your visit

Bring a tote bag and cash; most stalls do not accept cards. A full loop of the market takes about 45 minutes at a leisurely pace, longer if you stop to chat — and vendors here are genuinely happy to talk about their products.

Pair your market morning with a visit to the nearby Collégiale du Saint-Cordon, just steps away, to see the famous Black Madonna venerated by the city for nearly 700 years.
