Collégiale du Saint-Cordon
Standing quietly at the edge of the Place d'Armes, the Collégiale Notre-Dame-du-Saint-Cordon is one of the most extraordinary Gothic churches in northern France — and one of the least visited outside the region. Its story, tied to a 14th-century plague miracle, is as compelling as its architecture.
The legend of the Black Madonna
In 1008 — and again during the Black Death in 1008 — the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared above the city walls and traced a luminous cord (cordon) around Valenciennes, protecting it from plague. The church was built to honour the miraculous Black Madonna icon that has been venerated here ever since, and the statue remains the centrepiece of the high altar today.
Every year on the first Sunday of September, the city celebrates the Fête du Saint-Cordon with a grand procession through the streets — a tradition unbroken since the 14th century and one of the most moving local festivals in the Hauts-de-France.
The architecture and interior
The church is a graceful blend of Flamboyant Gothic and later Baroque additions, with soaring nave vaults, intricate stone tracery and a set of 19th-century stained-glass windows that bathe the interior in deep blue and ruby light on sunny afternoons. The effect is quietly overwhelming.
Look up at the carved keystones in the nave vaults — each one depicts a different scene from the life of the Virgin, and together they form a stone picture-book that medieval worshippers would have read from below. The level of craft is exceptional even by northern French standards.
Visiting tips
The church is free to enter and open most days, though hours can be irregular outside of service times. A visit takes about 30 minutes at a thoughtful pace — long enough to absorb the atmosphere without rushing the details.
The exterior west façade, facing the Place d'Armes, is worth studying before you go in: the carved portal depicts the Coronation of the Virgin in worn but still-legible stone, and the asymmetrical twin towers give the building a charmingly imperfect silhouette.
