Champ de Mars Esplanade & Parc Jouvet Belvedere
Valence sits on a natural terrace above the Rhône, and the Champ de Mars esplanade — stretching from the old town to Parc Jouvet — gives you a front-row seat to the river, the Ardèche plateau and, on crystalline winter days, a white saw-blade of Alpine peaks from Vercors to Mont Blanc. It costs nothing and the view is genuinely startling.
The esplanade and Napoleon's connection
A young artillery lieutenant named Napoleon Bonaparte was posted to Valence in 1785 and reportedly spent hours on this esplanade gazing west across the Rhône. A plaque near the Maison Dupré-Latour marks the house where he lodged — a satisfying bit of trivia to deploy while the view does its work.
The esplanade's formal allée of plane trees is one of the finest in the Rhône Valley, their canopies forming a cathedral vault in summer. At dusk the light turns the river the colour of beaten copper.
Parc Jouvet: roses, fountains and river walks
Below the esplanade, Parc Jouvet tumbles down the escarpment to the river bank in a series of terraced gardens. The rose garden peaks in late May and June with hundreds of labelled varieties — a riot of scent that makes it one of the most underrated green spaces in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
A riverside path from the park connects northward to the Pont de Valence and southward toward the Île de la Barthelasse ferry crossing. Rent a vélo from the Libélo bike-share station at the park entrance and follow the ViaRhôna cycle route for as long as your legs allow.
