Parque Natural Sierra de Cazorla
Just 45 minutes east of Úbeda, the Sierra de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas is the largest protected natural area in Spain — a landscape of limestone gorges, black pine forests, and the headwaters of the Guadalquivir river that feels a world away from the Renaissance stone of the city. Red deer, golden eagles and otters are all genuinely common sightings here.
Best entry points and experiences
The village of Cazorla itself is the most convenient gateway, with a dramatic ruined castle (Castillo de la Yedra) perched above its whitewashed streets. From here, the road into the park winds up through pine forest to the Parador de Cazorla, where the views back over the olive plain are staggering.
The Río Borosa trail is the park's classic walk: a 22 km out-and-back route (or shorter if you turn around early) that follows a turquoise river through a narrow gorge, passes two lakes and ends at a tunnel carved through the rock. The water is cold enough to swim in during July and August.
Birdwatchers should head to the Embalse del Tranco reservoir at dawn. Griffon vultures are virtually guaranteed; with luck you'll also spot short-toed snake eagles and, in winter, large flocks of common cranes stopping on migration.
Practical planning from Úbeda
There is no direct public transport into the park's interior. Rent a car in Úbeda (several agencies operate near the bus station) or join a guided 4WD excursion — operators in Cazorla village run half-day wildlife safaris for around €35 per person.
The park has several campsites and rural hotels; staying overnight dramatically improves wildlife chances, especially for red deer during the October rut when stags bellow through the forest at dusk.
