Mirador del Paseo del Mercadillo
Perched on Úbeda's northern escarpment, this long promenade viewpoint delivers one of the most quietly astonishing panoramas in southern Spain — a seemingly infinite sea of olive trees rolling toward the Sierra Mágina mountains, with the white villages of Baeza and Begíjar floating on the plain below. Bring a camera and allow more time than you think you'll need.
The view and the light
On a clear winter morning after rain, the Sierra Nevada's snow-capped peaks appear on the southern horizon, over 100 km away. In summer the olive groves shimmer silver-green in the heat, and at golden hour the entire plain turns amber — a genuinely moving sight.
The viewpoint stretches along the old city wall for several hundred metres, giving multiple angles and framing opportunities. The section near the old Puerta de Granada offers the best unobstructed sightlines.
Getting the most from the visit
Combine the mirador with a walk along the Paseo del Mercadillo, a shaded promenade lined with orange trees and benches that locals use for their evening paseo. It connects to the old town walls and several small gardens.
Sunrise here is spectacular and almost entirely crowd-free. Pack a thermos of coffee and arrive 20 minutes before dawn for a private light show over the olive sea.
