Volcán de Lodo El Totumo
About 45 minutes north of Turbaco on the road toward Galerazamba, El Totumo is a 15-metre-tall mud volcano where you can literally float in warm, mineral-rich grey mud — an experience so surreal it looks like a scene from another planet. The high salt and mineral content means you bob effortlessly on the surface, and locals say the mud has skin-softening properties.
The Climb and the Plunge
A narrow wooden staircase spirals up the cone's exterior; at the top a small opening reveals a crater pool of warm grey mud perhaps four metres across, already occupied by a cheerful mix of Colombian day-trippers and international travellers.
Attendants wade in with you and offer enthusiastic, borderline-comedic mud massages — it is impossible to keep a straight face. The mud temperature hovers around 37°C year-round because the heat source is not magma but decomposing organic matter and natural gases.
After the Mud: The Lagoon Rinse
Once you climb back out, coated head to toe in grey clay, women from the nearby village row you in small wooden canoes across the adjacent Ciénaga del Totumo to rinse off — this lagoon dip is half the fun and included in the experience fee.
A row of simple food stalls at the base sells cold costeño beer, fried fish and patacones — the perfect post-mud refuel as you dry off in the Caribbean breeze.
