Mercato di Piazza Rinaldi & Pescheria
Every Tuesday and Saturday morning, Treviso's medieval fish market island — the Pescheria — comes alive with vendors selling lagoon seafood from marble slabs, while the adjacent Piazza Rinaldi fills with fruit, vegetable and cheese stalls that have traded here since the 13th century. It is one of the most photogenic food markets in the Veneto, and it costs nothing to wander.
The Island Fish Market
The Pescheria sits on a small island in the Cagnan canal, its open-sided loggia dating to 1821. Fishmongers arrive before dawn with crates of moeche (soft-shell crabs), seppie (cuttlefish), branzino and Adriatic clams — the same species that end up on the plates of Venice's finest restaurants, sold here at a fraction of the price.
The market is at its loudest and most colourful between 8 am and 10 am, when restaurateurs elbow past housewives for the best catch. Watch for the distinctive folpeti — boiled baby octopus dressed with olive oil and parsley — sold ready-to-eat from plastic trays.
Fruit, Cheese and Radicchio
Spilling across the bridges onto Piazza Rinaldi, the produce stalls are a masterclass in Veneto seasonal eating. In winter, the market turns deep crimson with Radicchio di Treviso IGP — the long, bitter-leaf variety that is the city's edible emblem — piled in extravagant quantities alongside tardivo, its rarer, claw-shaped cousin.
Local cheese vendors offer aged Montasio, creamy Casatella Trevigiana DOP and slabs of smoked Asiago. A handful of stalls sell dried porcini, grappa-soaked figs and jars of honey from the Dolomite foothills — excellent, packable souvenirs.
Eating Around the Market
The narrow calli around the Pescheria are lined with bacari — Venetian-style wine bars — that open as early as 9 am to serve ombra (small glasses of wine) and cicchetti to market-goers. Osteria Muscoli's, right on the canal, is the local favourite for a post-shopping glass of Prosecco and a plate of cured meats.
If you visit on a Saturday, the market extends further south along Via Palestro with clothing and household goods, but the food island is always the beating heart.
