Monte Bondone & Viote Alpine Botanical Garden
Rising to 2,180 metres directly above Trento, Monte Bondone is the city's own mountain — reachable in under 30 minutes by car or cable car — and on its broad summit plateau sits the Giardino Botanico Alpino delle Viote, one of the highest and most species-rich botanical gardens in Italy. In June and July the meadows here are an almost hallucinogenic carpet of orchids, gentians and Alpine poppies.
The Botanical Garden
Founded in 1938 and sitting at 1,540 metres, the Giardino Botanico delle Viote cultivates over 2,000 Alpine plant species in themed beds that trace the vegetation zones from valley floor to permanent snowline. The garden is small enough to walk in an hour but dense enough to reward a full morning with a hand lens and a wildflower guide.
June is peak orchid season, when a dozen native species including Dactylorhiza and Gymnadenia bloom across the surrounding meadows. The garden staff are knowledgeable and often present for guided walks on weekend mornings — check the Museo delle Scienze website, which manages the site, for the seasonal programme.
Hiking and Winter Skiing
From the Viote plateau a network of well-marked trails fans out across the Bondone massif. The two-hour loop to the Cima Palon summit (2,180 m) rewards with a panorama that stretches from Lake Garda in the south to the Ortler glaciers in the northwest on a clear day. The path is non-technical but requires sturdy shoes.
In winter, Monte Bondone operates as a family ski area with 30 km of pistes and a reliable snow record thanks to its altitude. It is far quieter and cheaper than the Dolomiti Superski resorts to the east, and day-trippers from Trento ride the cable car up for a morning's skiing and return to the city for dinner.
