Villa Carlotta

Villa Carlotta is Tremezzo's crown jewel — a 17th-century villa whose terraced gardens cascade down to the lake in a riot of azaleas, rhododendrons and rare camellias every spring. Inside, Canova's marble sculptures and Thorvaldsen's friezes make it one of northern Italy's most rewarding house-museums.

The Gardens

Spread across seven hectares, the gardens climb the hillside in a series of themed rooms: a bamboo grove, a fern ravine, a Japanese maple collection and the famous azalea parterre that explodes pink and crimson from late March to early May.

A long wisteria pergola runs along the upper terrace, and a small waterfall feeds a lily pond — every corner is a ready-made photograph. Even in summer, the shade of ancient cedars and sequoias keeps the air noticeably cooler than the lakeside promenade below.

The Museum Rooms

The villa's eighteen rooms house an impressive collection of Neoclassical art, headlined by Antonio Canova's original plaster model for 'Palamede' and Bertel Thorvaldsen's monumental bas-relief 'Alexander the Great's Triumphal Entry into Babylon', commissioned by Napoleon.

Period furniture, Flemish tapestries and a room dedicated to 19th-century Lombard landscape painting round out the collection, giving real historical weight to what might otherwise be remembered purely as a pretty garden visit.

Planning Your Visit

Arrive by the first ferry from Bellagio or Varenna to beat the tour groups — the gardens feel genuinely serene before 10 am. The on-site café serves espresso and cornetti on the lakeside loggia, and the gift shop stocks locally pressed camellia oil.

Allow at least two hours; serious garden lovers routinely spend a full morning here. Boat taxis from Tremezzo's small pier land almost at the villa gate, making a water arrival the most atmospheric option.
