Tremezzina Olive Grove Trail
The hillside above Tremezzo is terraced with centuries-old olive groves that produce a delicate, grassy extra-virgin oil — one of the northernmost in Italy — and a marked footpath threads through them with continuous lake views and the scent of wild rosemary underfoot.
The Trail
The Sentiero degli Ulivi (Olive Path) links the hamlets of Tremezzo, Rogaro and Mezzegra along a network of ancient mule tracks and stone-walled terraces. The full loop is approximately 8 kilometres and takes 2.5–3 hours, but shorter sections can be walked from any of the three villages.
The oldest olive trees on the route are estimated to be 300–400 years old, their trunks twisted into baroque shapes by centuries of wind and pruning. In October and November, local families spread nets beneath the trees and harvest by hand — if you time your visit right, you may be invited to help.
Flora and Wildlife
Beyond the olives, the terraces support a rich Mediterranean microclimate unusual this far north: laurel, myrtle, rosemary and bay grow wild between the rows, and in spring the stone walls are threaded with yellow broom and pink cyclamen. The lake creates enough thermal mass to keep frosts rare, allowing plants that would not survive a normal Alpine winter.
Peregrine falcons nest in the cliffs above Rogaro and are regularly seen hunting over the terraces in the early morning. The path also passes through a small chestnut wood where red squirrels are common.
The Oil and Where to Buy It
Several small producers along the route sell their oil direct from the farm — look for hand-painted signs reading 'olio nostro' or 'vendita diretta'. The Tremezzina oil is pressed from Lariana and Casaliva olives and has a notably mild, buttery finish with a hint of artichoke — quite different from the peppery Tuscan style.
The best place to buy a bottle to take home is the Frantoio Sociale di Pianello Lario, a cooperative press about 12 kilometres north, which also accepts Tremezzo-area olives. Locally pressed oil is also stocked at the small alimentari on Via Regina in Tremezzo village.
