Valico di Chiunzi Pass
At 650 metres above sea level, the Valico di Chiunzi is the dramatic saddle that separates the Amalfi Coast from the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese plain — and on a clear day you can see both the Tyrrhenian Sea behind you and the distant Gulf of Naples ahead. It is one of the most cinematically rewarding roadside stops in all of Campania.
The View That Stops Traffic
Pull over in the small layby just east of the pass summit on the SS366 and walk the short path to the belvedere wall: to the south, the terraced lemon groves of Tramonti cascade towards Maiori and the shimmering sea; to the north, the flat agricultural plain stretches towards Pompeii and on very clear days you can make out the outline of Vesuvius.
The pass sits at the boundary between the Lattari Mountains Nature Reserve and the coastal Protected Landscape, meaning the vegetation changes dramatically on either side — Mediterranean maquis on the south face, mixed oak and chestnut woodland on the north.
Golden hour here is extraordinary: the low sun catches the terraces in a warm amber light while the sea below turns to hammered copper.
Getting There and Combining with a Hike
The pass is accessible by car or scooter on the SS366 from Tramonti (15 min) or from Pagani on the Salerno side (25 min). SITA buses between Amalfi/Maiori and Nocera Inferiore stop at the pass — useful if you want to hike one way and bus back.
The Alta Via dei Monti Lattari long-distance trail crosses the pass, and a well-signed 3 km loop from the layby takes you through chestnut forest to a ruined Bourbon-era watchtower with even wider panoramas.
Combine the viewpoint stop with a visit to the small Santuario di Santa Maria a Olearia just 4 km down the Maiori side — a rock-cut medieval church with 11th-century frescoes.
