Mercato Settimanale di Maiori (Tramonti Producers)

Every Thursday morning the seafront promenade of nearby Maiori hosts a weekly market where Tramonti farmers bring their valley's harvest directly to the coast — fat San Marzano-style tomatoes, hand-tied bunches of wild herbs, fresh ricotta and the valley's celebrated Tramonti DOC wine. It is the fastest way to taste the hinterland without climbing the mountain.

What the Tramonti Stalls Sell

Look for the hand-lettered cardboard signs reading 'prodotti di Tramonti': these stalls typically offer homemade conserves (sun-dried tomatoes in olive oil, chilli paste), fresh fior di latte, aged caciocavallo cheese and seasonal vegetables grown on the valley's terraces.

The wine stall run by the Apicella family — one of Tramonti's oldest winemaking dynasties — usually appears on the first Thursday of each month and offers unlabelled sfuso (bulk) wine in recycled bottles at around €3 per litre; it sells out fast.

Wild herbs including oregano, nepitella (a local mint-like herb) and dried bay leaves from the Lattari woodlands are sold in generous bunches for a euro or two — far better quality than anything in a supermarket.

Market Practicalities and What to Do After

The market runs from approximately 8 am to 1 pm along Corso Reginna in Maiori; the Tramonti producers tend to cluster near the inland end of the promenade, away from the clothing stalls.

After shopping, walk your haul to the beach, grab a sunlounger at one of Maiori's free public beach sections and picnic with your purchases — Maiori has the longest natural sandy beach on the Amalfi Coast.

The Thursday market is also a good place to ask local producers about visiting their farms or cantinas in Tramonti — many welcome visitors by appointment.
