Tramonti's Scattered Borghi
Tramonti is not a single village but a constellation of thirteen tiny borghi draped across a high valley behind the Amalfi Coast — a world apart from the tourist crowds below. Walking between Gete, Polvica, Capitignano and Figlino feels like stepping into a living medieval map where every bend reveals a chapel, a chestnut grove or a grandmother hanging laundry.
A Valley Hidden Above the Coast
Most visitors speed through the SS163 coastal road without ever realising that a broad, fertile valley sits just one ridge inland, sheltering a community that has farmed, baked and made wine here since Lombard times.
The main access road climbs from Maiori through lemon groves and terraced vineyards, arriving at an altitude of roughly 400–600 metres where the air is noticeably cooler and the views back towards the Tyrrhenian Sea are breathtaking.
Each hamlet has its own parish church and its own micro-identity — Polvica is the administrative centre, while Gete is famous for its ancient mills and Capitignano for its frescoed sanctuary.
How to Explore on Foot
A network of mule tracks — many paved with original limestone slabs — connects the borghi, making Tramonti one of the best walking destinations on the entire Amalfi hinterland.
The Sentiero dei Limoni and several CAI-marked trails pass through or near the valley, linking Tramonti to Ravello and Maiori with routes that take between two and five hours depending on your starting point.
