Mont Faron Summit
Ride the historic télécabine up to 584 metres and suddenly the entire Rade de Toulon — one of the finest natural harbours in Europe — unfolds below you like a painted map. The panorama stretches from the Giens Peninsula to the Îles d'Hyères on a clear day.
The Ride Up
The Téléphérique du Faron has been whisking visitors above the pine-covered limestone ridge since 1954, and the six-minute gondola ascent is a thrill in itself — cable cars swing gently over rocky scrubland while the city shrinks beneath you.
At the top, a network of signed walking trails fans out through holm oak and Aleppo pine, so you can stretch your legs before the views pull you back to the terrace.
What Waits at the Top
The Memorial du Débarquement en Provence sits just below the summit and commemorates the Allied landings of August 1944 with tanks, artillery and a moving audiovisual show — history and landscape combined in one ticket.
A small zoo specialising in big cats occupies part of the plateau, a surprise that delights families who weren't expecting to lock eyes with a white tiger above the Côte d'Azur.
Practical Tips
The télécabine station is on Boulevard Amiral Vence; the last car down leaves around 18:00 in summer, earlier off-season, so check times before you linger too long over the view.
Bring a picnic — the summit café is modest, but the granite tables facing south over the bay are among the best al-fresco dining spots in all of Provence.
