Mercado Municipal de Torre-Pacheco
Torre-Pacheco sits in the heart of the Campo de Cartagena, one of Spain's most productive vegetable-growing plains, and the town's covered municipal market is where local farmers and housewives have been trading since the early 20th century. Come hungry and leave with bags full of things you won't find in a supermarket.
What to Look For
The market is at its most animated on Tuesday and Friday mornings, when stalls overflow with brócoli de Murcia, locally grown tomatoes, sweet pimientos and the knobbly limones de Murcia that perfume the whole hall. Vendors are used to tourists and happy to let you taste before you buy.
Look for the stalls selling pimentón de Murcia — the region's smoky, brick-red paprika — packed in small tins and far cheaper here than in any deli back home. It's one of the best edible souvenirs you can carry on a plane.
Beyond Fruit and Vegetables
The market's inner ring houses a handful of butchers and a fishmonger who takes daily delivery from the Cartagena fish auction. Ask for dorada or lubina from the Mar Menor fish farms — they arrive so fresh the eyes are still bright.
A small bar tucked into the corner of the market building opens at 7 am and serves café con leche and a tostada con tomate y aceite for under two euros — the kind of breakfast that reminds you why you travel.
