Mar Menor Lagoon & Los Alcázares Promenade
The Mar Menor is a 135-square-kilometre saltwater lagoon separated from the open Mediterranean by a thin strip of land, and its shallow, warm, almost-waveless water makes it one of the most beginner-friendly swimming spots in Europe. The town of Los Alcázares, just 8 kilometres from Torre-Pacheco, gives you the best promenade access.
Why the Mar Menor is Special
The lagoon averages only 4–7 metres deep and heats up to 30 °C by August, making it a natural spa. Its high salinity means you float noticeably more easily than in the open sea, and the absence of strong currents makes it ideal for families with young children.
Windsurfers and kitesurfers have used Los Alcázares as a training ground for decades — the reliable thermal winds that funnel across the lagoon in the afternoon are famous enough to have hosted international competitions here.
The Los Alcázares Seafront
The paseo marítimo of Los Alcázares runs for about 3 kilometres, lined with palms, chiringuitos and old-school ice-cream parlours. Rent a pedalo or a kayak from one of the beach clubs and paddle out toward the volcanic island of Isla del Barón, visible on calm days.
Wednesday and Saturday mornings see a lively street market set up along the promenade road, selling local fruit, ceramics and beach goods — a pleasant hour before the heat builds.
