Villa d'Este
No visit to Tivoli is complete without wandering the terraced gardens of Villa d'Este, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where more than 500 fountains, nymphaeum grottos and fish-pond avenues tumble down a hillside carved from a former Benedictine convent. The Fountains You Cannot Miss
The Viale delle Cento Fontane — the Avenue of a Hundred Fountains — is a long mossy wall of spouting eagles, boats and obelisks that connects the garden's main terraces; it is one of the most photographed corridors in all of Italy.
The Fontana dell'Ovato (Oval Fountain) frames a life-size nymph sculpture inside a horseshoe of cascading water, while the thundering Fontana di Nettuno at the lower garden sends a curtain of white water crashing into a broad basin visible from the town walls above.
Arrive early on a weekday morning to have the upper terraces almost entirely to yourself before the tour groups arrive from Rome.
Inside the Cardinal's Palace
The villa itself houses richly frescoed reception rooms painted by Federico Zuccari and his workshop, depicting allegorical scenes of Tivoli's mythological past — the Room of the Nobles and the Room of the Hunt are highlights.
A rooftop loggia offers a rare elevated view over the garden geometry, with the Tiburtine Hills rolling away behind the cypress trees.
Practical Visit Tips
The gardens are at their most theatrical in late spring when roses and wisteria bloom alongside the water features, but the illuminated evening openings in summer (usually June–August, check the official site) are genuinely magical.
Tivoli town centre sits right next to the entrance, so combine the visit with lunch on Piazza Trento before or after.
