Piazza Rivarola & the Rocca Pia Belvedere
While tourists queue at Villa d'Este, locals stroll to the grassy terrace beside the Rocca Pia — the squat 15th-century fortress commissioned by Pope Pius II — where a low stone wall frames one of the best free panoramas in the entire Lazio region, sweeping from the Aniene river gorge to the Roman plain and, on clear days, to the dome of St Peter's far in the distance.
The View and the Fortress
The Rocca Pia itself is occasionally open for temporary exhibitions and its cylindrical towers are a striking foreground element for wide-angle photographs of the valley below.
The terrace around Piazza Rivarola is an informal gathering spot at aperitivo hour, when Tivoli residents bring folding chairs and bottles of local Frascati to watch the sun drop behind the Castelli Romani hills.
The view north-west along the Aniene gorge is particularly dramatic — you can see the white spray of the Cascata Grande from here on days when the river is running full.
Walking There from the Centre
From Piazza Garibaldi (the main town square), follow Via Boselli and Via della Missione for about 400 metres; the walk takes under ten minutes and passes several good pastry shops.
The area around the fortress is also the starting point for the short walk down into the Villa Gregoriana park, making it easy to chain both experiences in a single afternoon loop.
