Alto del Acebo
Sitting at 1,050 metres on the old pilgrim road between Tineo and Pola de Allande, the Alto del Acebo pass delivers a 360-degree sweep of forested mountain ridges that seems to go on forever. On a clear day you can trace the line of the Cantabrian Mountains all the way to the horizon.
Where the Camino Primitivo Touches the Sky
The Alto del Acebo is one of the most celebrated stages of the Camino Primitivo, the oldest pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. Pilgrims have been pausing here to catch their breath — and their bearings — since the 9th century.
A stone waymarker and a small pilgrim shelter mark the summit. The view north reveals the green patchwork of the Tineo valley, while south the land drops into the wilder, emptier Allande district. Bring a jacket: even in August the wind can bite.
Getting There and What to Bring
The pass is accessible by car on the AS-216 road linking Tineo with Pola de Allande; there is a small pull-off layby at the top. Walkers can tackle the classic 18 km Camino Primitivo stage from Tineo, which gains around 600 m of elevation through chestnut and oak forest.
Sunrise and late-afternoon light produce the most dramatic colours on the ridges. Pack water and a snack — the nearest café is back in Tineo or forward in Borres village, 4 km downhill on the Allande side.
