Playa Grande, Puerto del Carmen
Stretching nearly a kilometre along Puerto del Carmen's seafront, Playa Grande is Lanzarote's most visited beach — and for good reason. Fine golden sand, calm turquoise water and a lively promenade packed with restaurants make it the undisputed heart of the resort.
The Beach Itself
The sand here is naturally golden rather than the dark volcanic grit you find elsewhere on Lanzarote, giving the whole bay a Mediterranean warmth that surprises first-time visitors.
Lifeguards patrol daily in high season, sun-lounger and parasol rentals are plentiful, and the water shelves gently — making it a safe, easy swim for families and nervous paddlers alike.
The Avenida de las Playas
Running the full length of the beach, the Avenida de las Playas is lined with ice-cream parlours, tapas bars and dive shops. It's at its best in the early evening when the promenade fills with strolling locals and the Atlantic turns amber.
Look for the small fishing boats still pulled up at the eastern end near the old harbour — a reminder that Puerto del Carmen was a working village long before the sun-seekers arrived.
Getting There from Tías
Puerto del Carmen sits within the municipality of Tías, so the beach is effectively on the doorstep. Local bus line 2 from Arrecife stops right on the promenade, and taxis from central Tías village take under ten minutes.
Parking is available on the streets behind the promenade but fills fast in July and August — arrive before 10 am or come on foot.
